Timeless Thoughts: 90s/early 2000s music

Timeless Thoughts is a monthly blog linkup hosted by Georgie and Tara, where bloggers would write about something from their past. Any topic from the past will do – it can be a place, an event, an item, or an old hobby. The linkup starts on the first Saturday of each month and runs for two weeks.

My favorite boyband, Westlife. I love them as a four-piece, but we’re reminiscing here. Of course it wouldn’t be the Westlife of my childhood without Brian McFadden.

My siblings, like all teenagers of their time, loved listening to music. I remember my sister watching MTV in full volume at home, and I definitely remember my family going on a weekly trip to the music store to buy the latest Westlife, Backstreet Boys, NSync, Britney Spears, and Boyzone albums1.

Recently, I stumbled upon a Facebook video compilation of famous 90s and early 2000s pop songs that defined our generation’s childhood. Since many of these songs are still staple karaoke songs during parties, some Facebook users turned this into a game where you have to watch the video without humming or singing along! It was so difficult because when I love a song I really get the urge to sing along with it!

Anyway, I did the challenge with my friend Lisette. While we did this just to get rid of boredom, I thought it would be nice to share it with everyone as well. I think it would be fun to share the video so you guys could know some of my (and my fellow 90s kids’) favorite songs2!

(Don’t worry if you can’t understand what we’re saying in Filipino/Tagalog, we’re just reacting and aren’t saying anything important lol)

My score: 10/18
Lisette’s score: 13/18

A difficult challenge, indeed. As you can see, I lost as soon as the first song played. Lol!

So, did you hear some of your favorites as well? 😛

  1. One funny memory I had was buying the latest NSync album and hearing its bonus track: the Spanish version of “This I Promise You”. I cried because I couldn’t understand the lyrics. My brother, always ready to make fun of me, told me that it was in a different language because I had unknowingly bought a fake album of another group pretending to be NSync. LOL!
  2. The songs on the video are as follows (there was no #13 on the video for some reason!):
    1. Shape Of My Heart – Backstreet Boys
    2. This I Promise You – *NSYNC
    3. I Do (Cherish You) – 98 Degrees
    4. My Love – Westlife
    5. I Knew I Loved You – Savage Garden
    6. Oops I Did It Again – Britney Spears
    7. Bring Me To Life – Evanescence
    8. I Want It That Way – Backstreet Boys
    9. Tearin’ Up My Heart – *NSYNC
    10. Love Me For A Reason – Boyzone
    11. Queen Of My Heart – Westlife
    12. Sometimes – Britney Spears
    13. Everytime – A1
    14. Stuck In My Heart – C21
    15. I’m All About You – Aaron Carter
    16. All Or Nothing – O-Town
    17. Here Without You – 3 Doors Down
    18. One Sweet Day – Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men

  1. OMG. I just got the Millennium album of Back Street Boys and am going back into Britney Spears’ early career and love the music. Brings me back to my childhood and beyond.

    1. Haha, that’s alright, we were also into anime and game music when we were young! We used to get the anime soundtracks and piano collections from those weekly record store trips as well XD

  2. Ahhh! 90s songs were the day 😀 I was never into Westlife, but I was into Backstreet Boys! Thanks to those NOW album, that exposed me to all the awesome 90s songs.

I am looking at the list of songs, and it’s bringing me back so many memories and feels. “I Knew I Loved You”, “I Want It That Way”, “Sometimes”, and “One Sweet Day” are my favourites. Oh, man, I can think of several other 90s songs to add to this list. I would totally add songs by Green Day, Blink 182, and many, many others!

Thanks for joining Timeless Thoughts ^_^

  3. Argh! I can’t listen to the video because I’m at work. I haven’t heard of Westlife but recognize all those other names. I wasn’t ever really into 90s bands/musicians because I was a little too young but I had friends who were OBSESSED with the Backstreet Boys. She would have posters of them all over her wall, haha.

    1. Westlife is an Irish boyband, one of the most popular in our country during the boyband craze. I don’t think Westlife tried to break into the US market, so that may be the reason why you haven’t heard of them! 😀

LOL I remember some people who used to be crazy about Backstreet Boys too! I also remember people buying those song hit magazines so that they could read all about Backstreet Boys and get the free poster that usually comes with the magazines. Hahaha!

  4. Awww yesss, I love 90s pop songs! I totally grew up with Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Spice Girls, Mariah Carey, and Brittney Spears. I especially loved NSYNC back then. I remember the boy band wars back then when people would choose between Backstreet, NSYNC, and 98 degrees, haha.

I recognize almost all of the songs! There’s just a few that I don’t think I knew 🙂

    1. Right?! Haha I remember those boy band wars too! Music channels even had polls back then and people had to call the station to vote for their favorite boy band lol!

  5. The 90s were seriously the best. I have to confess, I was a HUGE HUGE HUGE *NSYNC fan in the 90s and early 00’s. I liked the Backstreet Boys too, of course. To this day, I still like Britney, although I prefer her older music. I find it sad how she doesn’t try anymore and she just flops her arms around on stage and calls it preforming.

  6. Oh, I’m not sure what happened to my comment up there. Seems it ended up eaten. 🙁

Anyway, this was such a fun challenge! I can tell it was difficult because I had a hard time not singing along, too. I definitely want to try this with one of my friends one day. I have a feeling my score would be so low, though there were some songs I didn’t know so I can use that to my advantage, ha.

Bring Me To Life was such a quintessential part of my childhood that I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have been able to last half a second without singing along!

    1. HAHAHA Bring Me To Life is one of my favorite songs too! It was so hard not to sing along because it’s still one of my karaoke songs to this day XD

  7. Ahhh! I love your video haha I’ve seen an English version by Youtubers React or something and it was hilarious! I’m glad you made your own version haha
I love the early 2000s! (Can’t really say I’m a 90s kid because I was born ’96 lol) The fashion was cringey but the music was iconic. I was also a fan of boybands and Evanescence, and of course, Britney Spears! I don’t like Mariah Carey’s personality but she was the diva back then and her songs were chart-topping.
